Immigration Issue My 2 Cents
I usually don’t like discussing politics; I find them boring and redundant. Most of the political discussions in my family only end up with someone punching Uncle Eddy in the face and the nieces and nephews pissing on him and the baby poking him with a stick. But I do pay attention to the issues, mostly so I can purposely disagree with family and friends so I can see how far I can push their anger. It’s a good time you should come visit.
Anyway, on one particular point of the immigration issue specifically the militarization of the boarder. If you think the U.S. military has not been used on the boarder in the past then you must live in a world all your own. I know this as a fact because I was there and I have done it.
In March of 1994 my unit was sent to the Arizona boarder to “detect, record, and survey”, the passage of drugs brought into the country illegally. We were there to watch, document, observer, and report any and all activities of anyone that entered our area of responcability. Although we did have our weapons, m-16 rifles and, m-9 pistols, we had very little ammo and were instructed to use the weapons only "as a last resort". We were instructed to not make contact with anyone we observed in any way under any circumstances what-so-ever. We were instructed to basically be the eyeballs of the D.E.A. Out of the 30 days that my company was there, my squad was in the field for 10 of those days at 5 continuous days at a time. Out of the 10 days we spent in the field we saw very few drug traffickers at all. But we did see a lot of people crossing the boarder illegally. So as the good Marines that we were we followed our orders and called the higher ups and informed them of the situation and within a few minuets there was a boarder patrol agent on the scene arresting the people.
I don’t know if these people were actual drug runners or just people from Mexico or some other country trying to better there lives. We simply followed our training and our orders.
Does this still go on today, I don’t know, but I would bet that it does. Is it legal I you tell me.
