BISHOP WARD WINS 4TH STRAIGHT STATE TITLE
Can you say "Dynasty!!"
Congratulations to the Bishop Ward Cyclones on the 4th straight state championship. They have are the first team in the history of the state to win 4 consecutive state titles in ANY class. In the state of Kansas there is a rule called the mercy rule which states that when a team is winning my more that 10 runs after 5 innings then the game is called and the win going to the team with 10 runs. The Cyclones not only did this once but twice in the tournament.
This is from the Star.
Bishop Ward took home the hardware after winning the state title. Bishop Ward had opponents begging for mercy all weekend on its way to the 4A crown. The "mercy rule" used in Bishop Ward's 16-3 victory over Eudora in Saturday's 4A final, is intended to prevent one team from shellacking another team any further once it is clear who is more dominant.
Kansas rules state that if one team has a lead of 10 or more runs after five innings, the game will be called.
But this weekend in Salina, mercy was a little late to the party as Bishop Ward won its fourth straight state title by producing 45 hits and 45 runs in just 13 innings at bat.
The Cyclones defeated Eudora in five innings Saturday afternoon in the championship game and confirmed Bishop Ward's dynasty status.
"This is very special" Ward coach Dennis Hurla said. "I don"t think anyone's ever won four straight titles in any class, so that in itself sets this team apart from the others". Ward advanced to the title game after beating Andover Central 16-0 in five innings in the semifinals. Aaron Quisenberry threw the shutout for the Cyclones.
